Podcast series recorded by Coaches for Coaches

My name is Peter, a Neurolanguage Coach of English and this is my Introductory Podcast recording.

Hello, my name is Peter and I am a former school Teacher, an active Interpreter, a Specialized English Language Trainer, Motivational and Life Coach, a Trainer for Teachers and academic students, a Writer and Author and eventually a Neuro-linguistic Coach; my major is English, though it is not my Native Language at all. I do coaching in English and I do research on how much a language can influence our lives.

I have decided to begin recording the podcast since, we coaches, we mostly listen, we speak and we talk, we reckon words and sentences our clients say but: do we hear ourselves, the way we talk or speak, in particular in foreign languages? In conversation with various coaches I want to find all the possible answers. Listen to the reasons how and why it all began. The recording is posted beneath.

The Aims of the podcast recordings

The aim of the podcast series is to familiarise our listeners, Coaches and Coachees, with the most frequent coaching subjects. There are many issues that coaching covers, and they are distant. There are many tools, methods, models that are very specific for coaching. All coaches have them at their disposal, but the question is if all coaches are aware when to utilise them, what moment is the relevant in a coaching session or in a whole coaching process. The question arises: do they need to plan the tools’ usage, or do they make a plan when to use them. The utilization must be thought-through in order to help their Clients achieve their preset goal faster and in more effective manner. Our discussions here range from the most frequent areas of Client’s concerns, through deliberate approaches, to highly sophisticated mixed Coaching models and methods.

This background gives me a reason to even more demanding issue of Coach profession – the language. I have been using a socio-linguistic approach for long in my coaching practice. And for a long time that was sub-conscious activity. But not anymore. A few studies explored the under-researched area of the coaching effect on clients’ spoken and internal language, the link to individual change, as well as the effect of Coach language on Client language. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, 24 in-depth interviews were conducted with Coaches, and their Clients who were e.g. business leaders.

The study findings, derived through thematic analysis clearly suggested that:

– coaching plays a meaningful role in changing Clients’ language and

– that the language change may be linked to an individual’s change.

Furthermore, Coach language and linguistic techniques are instrumental in Client language change. Sociolinguistic* approaches allow us to study the impact of social factors on cognitive processes as these result in the acquisition of a new linguistic system. Sociolinguists are interested in how differently we speak in varying social contexts (here: coaching session), and how we may also use specific functions of language to convey social meaning or aspects of our identity.

*Sociolinguistics is a well-established branch of linguistics that focuses on the study of the impact. Sociolinguistics teaches us about real-life attitudes and social situations.

Language is, perhaps, the most pervasive active ingredient in Coach-Client interactions (Flaherty, 2005; Sieler, 2014), yet

-the extent to which coaching changes a client internal and spoken language,

-the role of language as an individual change agent and

-its role in coaching success

seem to have largely escaped from researchers’ scientific scrutiny.

An explanation to this could be that language is simply so familiar to us and drops out of sight. This knowledge gap presents a potentially significant research opportunity since neuroscience suggests the existence of a link between language change and individual change, one of the main goals of coaching (Feldman Barrett, 2017; Kahnemann, 2011). Therefore, there are three questions that I mostly ask my guest Coaches:

1) How does Coach’s language influence Client’s language during a coaching intervention?

2) Does the language used by a Coach (two, three different languages) change the client’s attitude towards the engagement (goal achieving), faith in coaching effectiveness and the success of coaching process? and eventually

3) To what extent does coaching change Client’s language?

The podcast is intended to share coaches’ insights from their work exploring how language in coaching communication can help coaches reflect on their linguistic communication with Coachees e.i. Clients. Each coach presents a case study of their communication in their professional path, which involved considering linguistic choice in light of the Client’s goals, values and beliefs and language role in the coaching session construction, earning Client’s trust and finally positive approach to effective mutual understanding (communication).

Through these podcast conversations I want to critically reflect on the role and boundaries within which the applied language that Coach and Coachee operate/speak. And, through this podcast, I hope to meet language skills expectations for Non-native English Speaking coaches and give them possibility to listen, to revise, to learn and to improve English language skills for pursuing their coaching practise.

Everyone wants to be at least good in their profession, whether they are Teachers, Sociologists, Tutors, Psychologists or Mentors, whether they speak to a client or to a fellow coach – they all want to communicate using the most appropriate English language, regardless of what their native language is. Certainly, the podcast listening possibility is also for those clients who are interested in employing a Coaches for their own reasons. By listening to professional coaches talking on their expert fields Client may learn what character their problems or issues have. The Expert-Coaches explains what tools, coaching models, methods and other techniques they use during their coaching sessions and coaching processes. Since, what we need to underline here, each coach has free hand to utilise and apply the most effective.

Our guests are practitioners whose specialties are various and tools they use differ, but each of these domains is equally interesting, not a bit less important – not a bit more important, worst or better, in other words must be the most appropriate for a particular moment in a coaching process in each individual case.

The coaches come from various European countries and are ideal representatives of their native perception of what a particular coaching issue is. At the same time their speciality, is perceived by them through their practice and practical understanding shaped by multiple sessions with clients in defined language, most frequently – English. The current-day coaching tells, also, how important is not only the language itself but also the fact of being bi- or multilingual in this profession, I would rather say not profession but vocation. This this only way to faster, quicker ad in-depth understanding of client’s worries.

For majority of my guest Coaches this is their passion. Many of us, good command of at least two languages, helps a lot to express, to utter and articulate better, and on the other hand, to understand our Client while coaching conversation. Well, I daresay -we are good enough to read their minds. Let me here quote the great Frankish king who once said: “To have another language is to possess a second soul”.

English language is perfect for international communication, unquestionably in business environment and daily communication including eg. managerial coaching, but we need to bear in mind how irreplaceable the ability to speak in foreign language or languages proves to be. The ability to speak languages is vital. Before you start listening to these podcast recordings let me once again cite, but this time Federico Fellini who said: “A different language is a different vision of life” – well … my dear podcast listeners … that goes without saying.

Anyway, our common language that joins us together is still English and therefore we, my dear international fellow-coaches, we need to e.g. to hone it through podcast like this and obviously improve our English language skills like listening, speaking, posing adequate questions, paraphrasing, in a continuous manner. And remember: all of this in order to comprehend, communicate and clarify to Clients much better, and gain the trust.

Simultaneously, we ought to revise our coaching skills and language skills equally, and treat it as long-life learning, whether it is formal or informal education. To all my guest Coaches, coaching is their passion, thus with no doubt, we can trust in what they do. Remember: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream” said a British writer -Clive Lewis and …. let me promote here a bit …. set a goal , fulfil your new dream with our international multilingual Coaches. Do not fear talking with us!
